Cool Clematis

I love the bold colours of these large and striking Clematis flowers. I have got it wrong in the past when I have described the colours in some of my pictures so before I started to write anything I checked out with my youngest son so now I can say with confidence how much I love the different shades of pink and yellow.

Only kidding, purple and cream :)

These are such beautiful flowers and so that is why I have posted several shots .

Exotic Plants

I went to the zoo to look at animals, bugs and birds, not plants however in the butterfly house there were some beautiful exotic pants to attract the butterflies and I guess to provide a food source for them. Many seemed to prefer feeding on the pieces of fruit left out for them or the sugary solutions in small dishes however the plants in the pictures above did attract a few hungry creatures.

The first shot is a detail from the stamen of the flower in the second image which seems to be a lily of some description.

The third picture is of a tiny yellow flower which was the food source for the butterfly in the fourth of yesterdays images and if you look at that picture it will give you some indication of how tiny this blossom really is.

Lepidoptera Rhopalocera

These butterflies were in the butterfly house at Chester Zoo and they were extremely lively so it was very difficult to capture an image of them with wings extended, so I focused instead on getting shots of them close up while they were feeding. I really like the eyes, they are surprisingly colourful. I am sure you will agree that these are better looking insects than the leaf-cutters I posted yesterday.

Coming Up Roses

Everybody likes to receive flowers don't they and who wouldn't when they look like this.

Over the next few days I will deconstruct the beautiful bunch in the final picture and show close up shots of some of the individual blooms.

Today it is the rose which is the central feature of the arrangement.  It is a beautiful peachy pink with luscious petals which you can see in these pictures, what you can't get from the picture is the beautiful scent.

Enter The Dragon

From a small Chameleon yesterday to a real giant of a lizard today.

This majestic beast is a Komodo Dragon, the largest living lizard and native of Indonesia. They are very much an endangered species so it is good to see the conservation work going on at Chester Zoo, as well as this young adult male there are two or three young female dragons on display.

They can grow up to 3 metres or 10ft in length, and up to  70kg or150lbs in weight.

This chap is 5 years old and has reached breeding age.  He has a voracious appetite and his diet consists of calves which are brought in for him to devour.
