A dusting of snow
Just a couple of snow themed pictures for today. These were taken in Styal woods and although the fields around the woods were covered with snow in the sheltered woodland there was just a light dusting.
The first picture is a macro shot of some snow flakes/crystals which in reality would just about cover the tip of my thumb. These flakes were resting on a small clump of moss at the base of a tree.
The second picture is of snow layered on a fallen Birch tree. I was interested in the curl of bark which stood out because of the snow, if it hadn't been for the white background I am not sure I would have noticed it, as it is I think it is quite an interesting shot.

Fungus Revisited
In October I posted some pictures under the title "unusual growth", they were of a fungus which I now know to be called by various names including Jew's Ear, Judas' Ear or Jelly Ear Fungus. It is an edible fungus, named Judas Ear because it commonly grows on dead Elder trees and Judas apparently hanged himself from and Elder tree after betraying Jesus.
The pictures I posted back in October were of some of the fungus which were turning black and shriveled and looked vaguely bat-like. Today I have posted some of the fresh and new growth, actually on the very same tree stump as the previous shots.
If you want to find out more about this fungus and even find a recipe for hot and sour soup using the fungus check out the link, if not then just enjoy the photos.

Unusual growth
In February this year I went on a family day out to Styal woods by Quarry Bank Mill. The weather was perfect for the time of year and I decided to leave my camera at home, for once this was a day when I wouldn't be obsessing about taking pictures, I was just going to enjoy the walk, some time with the family and enjoy the surroundings.
The minute I got out of the car I was regretting the decision, the light was perfect and I knew that this was a missed opportunity. Don't get me wrong I had a great day, it was nice being out and I enjoyed exploring somewhere I'd not been before. But there were so many good photo opportunities and however much I tried I couldn't help mentally framing shots along the way.
I did however have my mobile phone and although it doesn't have the best camera for a mobile phone it's pretty good and when I saw these unusual fungi I wasn't going to pass up the chance to snap a few photos.
I've never seen fungi p ke this before or since, I think there is something bat like about it and definitely worth sharing. If anyone can tell me what variety it is I'd love to know.
