A Splash of Pink and Yellow

As I reached the end of my walk around the woodland at Chirk Castle my eye was caught by these beautifully coloured buds, they were really tiny and so could have easily been missed although they are very bright and stood out against their dark foliage..

I had no idea what they were, they have shiny dark green spiky leaves and these lovely yellow buds tinged with pink and they produce tiny yellow berries which eventually turn bluish black.  A little research revealed that they are a species of Oregon Grape. Apparently the berries are quite tart and can be used to make jellies or even fermented to make wine, and differnet parts of the plant can be used to make dyes of different colours. I think the plants themselves make a very pleasing image.
