Flying High

I have had a week off work and I have really enjoyed not having to think about the job and I have managed to get out with my camera on five of the last six days.

Yesterday I went to Mere Sands Woods and while waiting (unsuccessfully) to get a shot of a Kingfisher I practiced taking shots of birds in flight. I managed to get a couple of decent shots I think but it will be a while before I get around to posting them here so for today I have chosen a few more shots of the gulls that invaded my picnic on Saturday.

Although these birds appear to be hovering they were actually gliding past at speed. Apparently they fly between 15 - 28 MPH with their most efficient loiter speed being 22 MPH I would say these birds were "loitering with intent".

Interesting Geology

The Pembrokeshire coast around Ceridigion has some really interesting geology. Most of it is really only properly visible from offshore but here on the beach at New Quay it is possible to get up close.

I really like the different layers in the cliffs like the age rings of a tree laid down over millions of years.

I also love the rocks on the beach which are of a different material and look as if they have been melted and squeezed up out of the ground and in the final image the layer closest to the sand looks shiny and soft even though it is rock hard.

Is This a Sleeping Giant

Obviously the title for today's post relates to just the first picture. Later this year I will be going to Canada and for some of the time will be camping with friends in Sleeping Giant National Park. Last weekend I discovered that North Wales has it's own Sleeping Giant as can be seen in the first shot which is of the tip of Anglesey as seen from the beach at Gyrn Goch.

The next three pictures are focused on a group of three rocks but from slightly different viewpoints. I like the sheen on the rocks, I like the motion in the water and the soft colours in the sky. These pictures were taken just after the sun had finally dipped below the horizon giving a pinky glow.
