An Unusual Church

So these are the last of my pictures from Peyre, which as you will know from my posts over the past few days is a troglodyte village.  Obviously not all of the houses are built into the cliffs but the higher up the side of the hill they are.  The focus of today's pictures are the two churches in the village.

In the first picture the church can be seen as the highest building to the right, with two angular projections and the top of the arched door just visible above the nearby rooftops.

The second picture shows a small grotto with a natural spring built into the wall of the old church.  the water constantly flows into the trough just outside.

The third picture shows the interior of the church with the natural rock forming the main wall and the roof, with a stone built exterior wall on the left.  It was really an intriguing structure.

The final picture shows the "modern" church obviously built to meet the needs of a growing community.

I really enjoyed our brief visit to this small village and I hope that you have enjoyed it too from the pictures I have shared.

The streets of Peyre

Yesterday I posted a few pictures from Peyre in the south of France showing the steep and narrow streets.  However they didn't really give a good sense of how closely the houses hugged the cliff side so I hope that today's pictures put that right.

I like the colour of the stone work which in spite of the overcast sky still seemed warm, even in the semi derelict building in the first picture. I also like the way that even with limited space all the houses seem to be positioned to get a good view along the valley.

Troglodyte Village

In the Gorge du tarn in southern France there is a small troglodyte village called Peyre, built into the rock cliffs overlooking the river.  I had stopped there as a vantage point to get some photos of the Millau Viaduct  however as I walked the narrow streets I realised that the village itself was full of great photo opportunities.  I hope you will agree, and come back tomorrow for some more pictures of this special place.

Medieval France

Today's pictures are of Carcassonne in the Aude region of France.  The first photo was taken in the heart of the old city and the second and third are of houses just on the outskirts.

I really like the warm colour of the stone and the arched windows.  I also really like the tiled roofs.  The buildings in the second picture are in a very old part of the town but the TV satelite dishes on several house tops put the picture right into the modern age.

I loved visiting Carcassonne and look forward to sharing more pictures in the future, but for today enjoy these, feel free to leave a comment below.  Tomorrow I will be sharing a few pictures from Barcelona so make sure to look out for those...

Coast and City

After Monaco we moved on to Juan les Pins and today's pictures show a few of the boats at the marina and then some views of Grasse a small town to the north which is famous for perfume.

The narrow streets in the old town are characteristic of towns in Provence which appear to cling to the hillsides. It was fun exploring these back streets and getting a sense of the old town, especially given how great the weather was.
